Unlocking the Potential of the Workspace

Embracing Fluidity and Permeability

Studio Luiz Albisser's design approach for the Universal Music Headquarters in Zurich is a masterclass in creating a modern, flexible workspace. The studio has skillfully utilized materials and design elements to suggest a sense of permeability and fluidity throughout the space, while simultaneously establishing distinct boundaries to organize the various programmatic zones.Mid-height green metal mesh partitions separate the bistro from the lounge, creating a visual and physical separation that still allows for a sense of openness and connectivity. Similarly, the green light-filtering curtains that line the interior walls of the private meeting room dampen sound while allowing sunlight to filter through, creating a harmonious balance between privacy and transparency.

Curating a Vibrant Color Palette

The color palette curated by the Basel-based studio is a true feast for the senses. Rich blues, pastel violets, dark reds, and vibrant greens are juxtaposed with a diverse array of materials, including heavily grained wood, high-pile carpet tiles, granite, glass, translucent fabric, and metal. The Universal Music Headquarters are situated on the sixth floor of the Prime Tower, a building known for its vibrant mix of cultural, business, and nightlife offerings. The design team has seamlessly integrated the building's structural elements into the overall aesthetic, using veneered ash to clad the core and transform these functional components into pieces of furniture with storage capacity and modularity.This approach allows for a more flexible and adaptable workspace, as the design can be easily repurposed to accommodate changing needs over time. The green carpet that unifies and connects the entire floor surface further enhances this sense of cohesion, with its checkerboard design revealing itself in varying degrees depending on the incidence of light.

Defining Distinct Zones for Diverse Needs

The open floor plan of the Universal Music Headquarters is divided into three distinct zones: the Relaxation Zone, the Collaboration Zone, and the Focus Zone. Each area is defined through a combination of color contrasts, custom-made furnishings, and an array of textures and materials.The Relaxation Zone, which serves as the first encounter for visitors, features a comfortable lounge and bistro outfitted with blue metal floor lamps, lilac cabinetry, and furniture designed with soft, rounded edges and natural finishes. This inviting space sets the tone for the overall workspace, creating a welcoming and rejuvenating atmosphere.The Collaboration Zone, on the other hand, is designed to foster teamwork and interaction. It includes a generous workbench, height-adjustable hot desks in a deep blue varnish, and a large red meeting table, complemented by a separate private meeting room equipped with acoustic insulation and views overlooking the city.Finally, the Focus Zone, located at the far end from the entrance, features height-adjustable hot desks in a black varnish, creating a dedicated space for individual concentration and deep work.
