In the face of isolation and underrepresentation in the classical music industry, a group of talented Black composers have found radical support in one another, forming a dynamic collective known as the Blacknificent 7. Their groundbreaking work, which draws inspiration from the rich history and legacy of African queens, is set to captivate audiences at Ravinia's world premiere of "African Queens."

The Blacknificent 7 emerged from a virtual conversation hosted by acclaimed soprano Karen Slack during the COVID-19 pandemic. Slack, who will soon begin a residency at Chicago's Lyric Opera, invited rising Black composers to engage in a panel discussion, sparking a connection that would evolve into a powerful collective. The composers, including Jasmine Barnes, Damien Geter, Jessie Montgomery, Shawn Okpebholo, Dave Ragland, and Joel Thompson, found solace and support in one another, forming a group chat that became a hub for sharing feedback, resources, and opportunities.

Challenging Stereotypes and Celebrating Diversity

The Blacknificent 7 are united by their shared experiences as Black artists in a predominantly white classical music landscape, but they are also defined by their individual artistic voices. As Damien Geter, a Chicago-based composer, explains, "We're all very different composers, none of our music sounds the same at all, which you would expect from seven different people. But sometimes stereotypes creep in, and people can peg us as Black composers, and they expect this particular sound."

They have a dedicated Instagram account and a line of merchandise, including branded bucket hats, T-shirts, and sweatshirts, available through the Chicago Symphony Orchestra's online store. "I didn't know I needed this," Okpebholo reflects. "Most of the time I am the only Black person in white spaces."
