The Macomb County Sheriff's Office has responded to three such incidents in recent weeks, each one highlighting the grave dangers associated with this trend. In one incident, a juvenile fell from the rooftop of a 2012 Kia Optima being driven by another teenager, sustaining a head laceration and multiple abrasions. The Harsh Realities of "Car Surfing"
The Macomb County Sheriff's Office has made it clear that "car surfing" is an incredibly dangerous activity, with the potential for fatal outcomes. As Sheriff Anthony Wickersham aptly stated, "These participants do not seem to realize that they become projectiles, hitting cement or asphalt at 30-50 miles an hour. No matter what condition these individuals are in, their bodies are just not designed to take that much trauma."The statistics paint a grim picture, with an analysis of 58 newspaper reports of car-surfing deaths and 41 reports of nonfatal injuries from 1990-2008 revealing that the majority of cases occurred in the Midwest and South, primarily involving males and individuals aged 15-19.
The Consequences of "Car Surfing"
The consequences of "car surfing" can be severe, both for the participants and the drivers involved. Juvenile drivers who engage in this reckless behavior can face serious criminal charges, including reckless driving, seatbelt violations, permitting persons to hang on to the outside of a vehicle, and even vehicular homicide. The impact on the lives of those involved can be devastating, with irreversible consequences that extend far beyond the initial thrill-seeking.
